Whether it's soaking in history in Edinburgh, relaxing at an all-inclusive in Jamaica, or swapping stories with locals on a red double-decker in London, Robyn reminds us that the magic of travel is found not just in the destination, but in the journey, the people, and the personal moments in between. Read on to discover her unforgettable travel memories, best tips, and what inspired her to make travel a lifelong passion—and profession.

What’s your all-time favorite vacation spot — the place that just feels like your happy place?

My all-time favorite spot is Scotland. I visited three times in one year and just liked it better each time. The countryside is diverse, depending on what part of the country you are in, and the cultures and lifestyles of the people reflect this. The highlands are windswept and sparse, but beautiful and speak to adventurers. I visited the Isle of Skye where water and green fields abound. Portree is one of the most peaceful destinations to visit and stay for a few days. And Edinburgh is by far the most interesting city I have visited. The history and building of the city are ancient, and the Scottish people are so great at embracing their history, I have not been everywhere in Scotland and the cities call for more visits, so it is the place I will return to.

Do you prefer beach days, city adventures, or getting lost in nature? Why?

I do like to go to all-inclusive resorts, especially in Jamaica. They are a great way to really relax and not worry about working too hard to find things to do. It is nice to be catered to. However, I am not much of a beach person — maybe a day or two, but I prefer to visit cities and historical places and learn about history, culture, architecture, and more. I prefer guided tours with small groups and guides with down time to enjoy the local surroundings.

What’s the most unforgettable travel experience you’ve ever had?

The first time I went to Europe will always be the most memorable. I had gone with a group of students on a guided tour of seven countries. We landed in London, went to our hotel, and decided to just go out and ride the double-decker (red) bus around the area. We got on, and immediately someone commented that we must be from the U.S.! We said yes, they asked where, and then one of the passengers said they visited the US and went to Sheridan, WY. I said that I had lived there for several years. Well, proving that we do live in a small world, we knew several of the same people. So, I travel halfway around the world and the first person I talk to is someone who knows many of my friends! It was a defining moment for me.

What’s one travel tip or hack you swear by?

Travel is rewarding in so many ways. But travel does not begin when you arrive at the destination. It begins when you leave home or even when you are packing and anticipating the experience. Preparation is key to enjoying your trip. Things can and will always happen that can change the best plan. Giving yourself enough time between flights or changes in transportation styles is important. If it is so stressful to get to where you are going to have fun, you have missed part of the experience. Plan ahead, allow for possible delays, take time to breathe, have a coffee, crowd watch, enjoy the trip from start to finish.

What made you fall in love with travel — or become a travel advisor in the first place?

I grew up reading and longing to see the seven wonders of the world. But travel is so much more than just visiting those places. It is about connecting with the people and places on a personal level. I love to meet new people and hear about their beliefs and their culture and who and what they want from life; to take the time to sit and watch and visit and feel the surroundings and get a sense of what belonging there might mean. In so many ways, we all live our lives the same way, and yet we are so very different. The experience teaches us so much more than we could ever know. And we all know how much we appreciate our home and our way of life after we have traveled. Traveling is one of the best ways to appreciate life.
