Traveling can be stressful, especially when it comes to navigating airport security. To make your journey smoother, we’ve compiled some essential TSA travel tips straight from the experts at the TSA. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or heading to the airport for the first time, these tips will help you breeze through security with ease.

  1. Pack Smart: Start with an Empty Bag

Before you start packing, make sure your bag is completely empty. This helps prevent accidentally bringing prohibited items through the checkpoint. Not sure what’s allowed? Check out TSA’s “What Can I Bring?” webpage for a comprehensive list of prohibited items.

  1. Know the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule

Remember the 3-1-1 rule: Liquids, gels, and aerosols in your carry-on must be 3.4 ounces or less per container and fit into a single quart-sized bag. If it can spill, spray, spread, pump, or pour, it’s considered a liquid. Larger quantities should be packed in your checked luggage to avoid delays at security. For those traveling with infants, items like breast milk, baby food, and formula are exempt from this rule, but be sure to separate them for X-ray screening.

  1. Arrive Early

Airports are busier than ever, so plan to arrive at least two hours before your domestic flight or three hours before an international flight. This will give you enough time to park, check your luggage, and pass through security without rushing.

  1. Bring an Acceptable ID

Make sure you have an acceptable form of ID ready before you head to the airport. Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant identification to fly domestically. Visit the TSA website to find out which IDs are accepted.

  1. New Checkpoint Screening Technology

TSA is constantly updating its screening technology to enhance security and efficiency. Some airports now use facial recognition technology and Computed Tomography (CT) scanners that provide a 3D image of your bag’s contents. With CT technology, you won’t need to remove your 3-1-1 liquids or laptops, but make sure all your carry-on items go through the bin for screening.

  1. Travel with Ease with TSA PreCheck®

Join the more than 20 million members of TSA PreCheck® for a faster, less stressful security experience. As a TSA PreCheck® member, you won’t need to remove your shoes, belts, 3-1-1 liquids, food, laptops, or light jackets at the checkpoint. Plus, TSA PreCheck® lanes typically have wait times of 10 minutes or less.

  1. Request Passenger Support if Needed

If you or a family member requires additional assistance through security, you can request a TSA Passenger Support Specialist (PSS). These specially trained officers are available to help travelers with disabilities, medical conditions, or other needs. Make your request at least 72 hours before your flight by calling the TSA Cares support line at (855) 787-2227.

  1. Get Real-Time Help with @AskTSA

Have questions before heading to the airport? Text your questions to 275-872 (“AskTSA”) or reach out via @AskTSA on X or Facebook Messenger. Real-time assistance is available 24/7 through these channels.

  1. Respect Front line Employees and Fellow Passengers

During busy travel periods, it’s important to pack an extra dose of patience. Follow instructions from TSA officers, gate agents, and flight attendants, and show appreciation for those working to get everyone to their destinations safely.

  1. Stay Aware

Always be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity. The TSA encourages you to remember, “If You See Something, Say Something™.”

By following these TSA travel tips, you’ll be well-prepared to navigate airport security with confidence, ensuring a smooth start to your journey. Safe travels!
